Karin Hulgaard has Master of Science from DTU in engineering physics, focusing on physics, mathematics, and electronics.

Karin Hulgaard has many years of experience as a patent attorney in patent consultancy firms, as well as a European Patent attorney in in-house patent departments, namely within the wind turbine industry at Vestas Wind Systems A/S, subsequently within the field of catalysis at Topsoe A/S, and most recently as Head of IP at Nilfisk A/S (vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, high pressure washers, in operator driven and/or robotic versions).

Karin Hulgaard primarily handles clients’ interests in the following technology areas: physics, electrical devices, vacuum cleaners, high pressure washers, scrubbers, robotics, battery management systems, active battery materials, synthesis gasses, processes, laser technology, control, and software.

Karin Hulgaard has extensive experience in the following fields:

  • Assisting clients in the development and in the implementation of patent strategies into the day-to-day business operation
  • Patentability evaluations, drafting and prosecution of patent applications
  • Strategic investigations and monitoring, including competitor management and Freedom-To-Operate analyses
  • Oppositions and third party observations before the European Patent Office
  • Infringement analysis and validity assessments of competitor patents
  • Strategic decisions in relation to own patents/designs and in relation to others’ patents/design.

Karin started as a European Patent Attorney at Guardian in 2025.
